• In 2004, guns killed 29,569 people in the United States, including 649 unintentional deaths, 16,750 suicides and 11,624 homicides. A further 64,389 people were seriously injured by guns.[1]
• Guns are the second leading cause of injury death in Ohio and in the United States as a whole.[1]
• In 2004, there were 1,036 firearm deaths in Ohio (more than a 10% increase on the previous year), including 20 unintentional deaths, 657 suicides and 340 homicides.[1]
• In a population of 300 million people, there were an estimated 200 million guns in America in 2003.[2]
• 2/3 of those guns are long guns, 1/3 are handguns, and yet...[2]
• Handguns are used in 3/4 of firearm deaths.[2]
• Less than 8% of people killed by guns are killed in felony crimes; most are shot by someone they know or are suicides.[3]
• Nearly 1.7 million children, under the age of 18, live in homes with firearms that are both loaded and unlocked in the United States.[4]
• Over 40% of American households with children have guns.[5]
• On average, 45 children and teens are shot every day in America.[1]
