Crime statistics released by the FBI early this week state there were over 17,800 homicides in 2020 — the highest number in over 25 years. While the report doesn’t break down the numbers by specific type of weapon, Ohio appears to be trending towards an increase in deaths by a gun over last year.
The Gun Violence Archive indicates that in 2020, Ohio saw 849 gun homicides compared to 628 in 2019. As of today, September 28, 2021, there have been 632 Ohioans killed by gunfire — surpassing all of 2019. GVA further indicates that so far in 2021 across the U.S., there have been over 15,200 homicides/accidental deaths from a gun and nearly 18,000 suicides by gun.
