Governor Kasich Caved to the Gun Lobby - December 19, 2016

I'm extremely disappointed to share the news with you that Governor Kasich’s decided to sign The Guns Everywhere Bill, SB 199, into law this afternoon.

Governor Kasich had an opportunity to act with courage and veto this dangerous piece of legislation. Instead, he chose to ignore concerns from law enforcement, business, education, faith leaders, gun violence prevention advocates, and thousands of citizens from across Ohio and give his seal of approval to the agenda of the corporate gun lobby.

I know that you care about gun violence prevention and I hope you join us as we work on educating our daycares and campuses in particular about how to stay gun-free. If you're interested in becoming more involved, please click here to sign up to volunteer in your community.

The package of legislation allows for hidden, loaded handguns to be brought into a number of previously gun-free places, including daycares, private aircraft, public areas of airports, unattended vehicles in school safety zones, and also opens the door for deadly weapons to be secretly carried on college and university campuses and in government buildings in Ohio. The package also prohibits employers from keeping guns out of cars in workplace parking lots and grants active duty military - a group at increased risk of suicide - legal authority to carry hidden, loaded handguns without a permit.

We may have lost this battle, but the hard work this legislative session will serve us well in future victories. In the coming days and weeks, we will continue to share news with you as we move forward. Progress is not a sprint -- it's a marathon.

Thank you for your commitment to gun violence prevention.
